If you wish to claim a Medicare rebate, you will need a referral from your GP. This involves speaking with your GP about your mental health, after which they can assess your needs and prepare a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP). A MHCP allows access to Medicare rebates for up to 10 individual psychology sessions per calendar year. You can ask your GP to address the referral to a psychologist of your choice.
An initial Mental Health Care Plan provides access to six sessions. After your sixth appointment, your psychologist will write to your GP with an update on your progress and recommendations regarding ongoing support. If further sessions are appropriate, you can return to your GP to request a referral for the remaining four sessions. Medicare-rebated sessions reset each calendar year.
Alternatively, you may choose to claim sessions through private health insurance if you have extras cover for psychology. Rebates vary depending on your insurer and level of cover, so it’s best to check directly with your health fund to understand what benefits may be available to you.
